My photography business is slowly, but surely chugging along. I took it upon myself to have one major goal before graduating from college. That is, every summer I must take an internship in some field of photography. No matter what.
Last summer I started that goal at Richmond Photographics. It was my first peek into what professional studios look like, how to handle clients like American Family Fitness, and so on. However, I knew that this summer I had to do something different. What’s the point of interning in the same field? So this summer I contacted 11 Sixteen Photography to try Newborn Photography. YES, newborn photography. We all know that I’m a sucker for kids, and this was just what the doctor ordered.
Kelly, the owner, is amazing. The first day I met her at Debbie’s Kitchen for lunch and we hit it off. She came in with a Thirty-One bag, and what do you know I had one of mine too (For those of you who don’t know, Thirty-One is my other oh so amazing job!). We started talking about equipment, and found out that we have the same camera (Nikon D800 for those of you who were wondering). She had her Kelly Moore camera bag, and I had mine too. I learned that she loves Vitamin Water, and so do I. We really truly just clicked. So this summer, not only am I experiencing what it’s like to photograph newborns, but also kids up to a year old. And to my wonderful surprise, I’ve actually held two of my very own sessions at her studio (stay tuned for more to come on the next few posts!)
The moral of the story is, if you’re a Photography major, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE intern every summer with a different genre each year. It will honestly help develop your skills to be more well-rounded, AND it’ll save you time after college to decide what field you want to focus on!
