Today we’re going to talk about the top five tips for choosing your wedding colors!
- First off, pay attention to your venue color palette. I strongly urge you to consider the environment not only for your ceremony, but also for your reception. For instance, if you’re having an indoor reception with burgundy and gold carpets, a color scheme of hot pink and teal probably isn’t the best bet. An easy solution is to simply choose a space that lacks a lot of color that way you can avoid a potential clash.
- Order Mock Florals. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT just assume the vision in your head will be the same vision your florist has. Don’t let your florist show up on the day of the wedding with the wrong shade of pink. A super simple solution is to request that your florist put together a “mock” bouquet and centerpiece. That way everyone is on the same page. AND if you really want to get the most bang for your buck, schedule your “mock” bouquet + your hair and make-up trial all for the same day as your bridal portraits. That way you’re still getting the most bang for you buck, while still insuring that everything is all set for your big day.
- Make your color palette decision quickly. Choosing your wedding colors should be one of the most exciting parts of the wedding planning process (besides choosing your photographer-ha!). The colors will not only set the tone for your entire celebration, but everything, and I mean everything will be based around your color selection (the bridesmaids dresses, their shoes, the table-clothes, the reception decor, the florals, the venue and your accessories- just to name a few). So you see, if you don’t decide in a timely manner, be prepared to potentially be running around like a crazy lady trying to find items to match and coordinate. I totally recommend giving yourself a deadline, tell yourself by date x, you’ll have your color scheme chosen + have someone hold you accountable to it).
- Contrast. Say you order pale pink bridesmaids dresses. Everything’s all hunky-dory and since you’re already on a roll, you order the same color bouquets. Well here’s where the problem arises. If you don’t take variation into consideration, then you can expect to create a very flat look that lacks interest. A simple solution, choose varying shades to go along with your main colors.
- Be Mindful When Selecting a Bridesmaid Dress Color. Do not fall into the typical trap of choosing a color that looks great on you, therefore you assume it’ll look great on your attendants as well. This happens all the time. The truth is that not every single color looks great on every skin tone. Some hues will wash people out while others simply don’t flatter anyone. So, when selecting a bridesmaid dress, consider the varying skin tones, as well as the different body shapes of your favorite ladies. Take the girls to the bridal shop with you and narrow down a color that works well with the majority of your attendants. Not only will your friends thank you, but you’ll thank yourself later on when you get the photographs back as well!
